We care about your safety. Keep these tips in mind.
Electricity is a very safe energy source but it is important to follow proper safety procedures to avoid injury. The following are some safety rules to always remember:
- Look up when working with tall equipment such as fold-up planters, grain augers, CB antennas on tractors or ladders.
- Teach children not to fly kites near power lines, never climb utility poles or play near substations.
- Don’t use electric tools in the rain or on wet surfaces.
- If your equipment does come in contact with an electric line, first try to drive out from under it. If that isn’t possible, stay put and have someone call Prairie Energy Cooperative immediately. If you must leave your tractor (or car), JUMP CLEAR so you won’t make contact with the ground and vehicle at the same time.
- Stay away from Prairie Energy Cooperative equipment, which includes poles, guy wires, substations, underground transformers, and trucks working on lines.
- Stay away and keep other away from fallen power lines (including telephone and cable TV lines). Call Prairie Energy Cooperative immediately if you see downed lines.
- Keep all objects away from power lines. Ladders, antennas, and kites can be fatal when they contact a “hot” power line.
- Never touch a person who is in contact with a live power line.
- Plant trees away from overhead power lines and underground transformers.
- Don’t build or construct anything under overhead power lines.
- When doing any digging (18 inches or deeper) you must call Iowa One Call at least 48 hours before work begins. This is so that utilities can mark all underground utilities.
The Iowa One Call number is 811.
- When you see our crews and equipment along roadsides, slow down and proceed with care.
- If someone comes to your home as a Prairie Energy Cooperative employee, ask for identification, and look for our logo on the vehicle.
Your safety is our priority.
